17 Sources of Inspiration for Photographers.

Why do you take photographs?
For me it's what I love. Usually it is a very joyous process for me. But sometimes when I find that life is too stressful, I have the lack of inspiration.
No matter how much you love photography, there will always be days when you need inspiration.

Inspiration (from the Latin inspirare, meaning "to breathe into") refers to an unconscious burst of creativity in a literary, musical, or other artistic endeavor.

Inspiration is everywhere — from the paintings of the great artists to the words of your favorite writer, from the photographs of the famous masters of photography   to the paths and clouds on your morning walk.
You just need to open your heart.

If photography is just a hobby, you have time to wait for the inspiration needed to finish your project or a photo session.
But you should find inspiration when your income is dependent upon it.

I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite sources of inspiration. I’ll be glad if it will be useful for you too.

If you have fifteen minutes . . .

Listen to music.
Music has a positive influence on your creativity. One melody or a song can help you concentrate; another one will let you relax.
Just find the music that could help you to clear your mind from distractions. Let the music lead you and inspire you.

Think of something different.
Try to focus on something completely unrelated to your photography.
For example, write an essay or make a cake.

Use a change of scenery.
Do you work in a studio? Go outdoors. Are the beaches on your computer’s display boring you?  Replace them with fall images.

If you have an hour . . .

Read a newspaper or a magazine.
While reading a newspaper you could find an idea for your photography projects. You could find some creative work by the staff photographers in magazines which can burst your creativity.

 Browse Google images.
Toss keywords into Google images and you’ll find lots of images that can be inspirations for good photos.

Spend some time outdoors.
Nature is always a great source of inspiration. Appreciate the beauty around you.
Parks, countryside and even city streets can engage your creativity.

If you have a large block of time . . .

Go to a gallery or a museum.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso

For any creative person there is no better inspiration than great art.
Knowledge of art and photography history is a remarkable source of inspiration.
You could visit not only national museums, but small galleries and exhibitions to enjoy the great artworks.

Read a book.
Both fiction and nonfiction books can stimulate imagination.
If you have a couple of your favorite authors, try branching out into something different to find new inspiration.
Though there are so many other sources to find inspiration, books remain one of the most popular sources. Reading gets your imagination working.

Read a book on photography.
There is nothing better than having your own photo-book library. Every book will give you a bunch of new ideas.
One of the best ways to study visual art work is in books. Learn from the masters of photography. This is an amazing source of inspiration.

Read and/or write a blog.
There are dozens of great blogs on photography and every topic you like.
Reading about what works for others will inspire you to action.
And writing about photography will help you to improve your photographic process.

Stay healthy.
Creativity is interrelated to mental and physical health.
It can be difficult to feel creative when you are ill or tired.
Exercise, eat healthy and get plenty of sleep. All these simple things will give you more chances to find inspiration.

Listen to your dreams.
Dreams have inspired artists, including photographers, throughout the years. Use this interesting source of inspiration too.

“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”  Vincent van Gogh

Use the Internet.
The Internet has revolutionized many aspects of our lives. For artists it has become an invaluable source of information and inspiration.
My personal favorites are TED and Digital Photography School.

Use quotes.
I like to go to various quote sites to find ideas to spark my creativity.
You may want to try these:  brainyquote.com, quotegarden.com

Travel.
You could go abroad or visit the next town. When you are discovering new places it can become the great source for inspiration.

Create for the sake of creating.
Take photos because you enjoy it, not always because you want to create the artwork.
Although there are many sources of creativity, try to find inspiration simply in the process of taking photographs - the creating process.

Find what excites your creativity.

“That’s the whole secret: to do things that excite you”. Ray Bradbury
